Hi all,

A few years ago I bought a Nikon D3200. Along with the kit lens I also have a 35mm prime and 18-200 superzoom.

I mainly use the camera for travel photography, and have found the superzoom great, but a bit bulky to carry around. I enjoy photography, but not particular serious so mainly use aperture or shutter priority, and auto quite a lot.

Next year I want to go traveling and vlog my experience (more for my own memories than anything), and another downside I've found of the D3200 is the auto-focus is super slow and the mic pics up the sound of the lens (even if i manually focus i can hear it). I bought a shotgun mic, but it hasn't really helped.

So, I'm tempted to get either a Sony RX100 or Panasonic Lumix LX15 as nice and small to carry around, great photo quality and (I think) better video quality. Only downside I can see is I will miss the reach of my current super zoom and can't use a shotgun mic for vlogging.

Has anyone else gone from a DSLR to a super compact and pleased or regretted it? Any other recommendations on cameras I should be looking at?

Cheers

Reg

Interchangeable lenses are not for everyone.

I've used Pannasonic TX for a few years now. It is solidly made, so strong enough for traveling. It is light and the Zeiss lens give decent quality results. I'm well pleased with it.

I wouldn't necessarily go by personal recommendations. Go into a camera shop and try a range. It's all about handling if you are going for a top of the range compact as most have little to criticise them for.

I've gone from a 700D to an RX100 Mk1, then moved on to a RX100 Mk3, then went for it and bought a 5D3 which is fantastic but the zoom lenses cost a fortune and are a bit bulky.

For day to day pics I now use the RX100 Mk3 which has a lovely zoom lens of 24mm - 70mm which is OK but is still limiting, so went out at the weekend and bought a physically bigger Sony RX10 Mk3 from John Lewis, which is superb and comes complete with a monster 24mm - 600mm zoom lens, which if I'm honest, is plenty good enough for the majority of subjects I photograph, as with the RX100, it comes with aperture and shutter priority modes plus full manual and AUTO modes.

If you're looking for an alternative all in one solution then Panasonic also do a shorter reach camera (24mm - 400mm I think) which is in the same league as the Sony, just a lot cheaper, so may be something worth considering.

I also purchased a double battery pack + standalone charger from Amazon to ensure I didn't get caught out with the dreaded flat battery syndrome, though hasten to add I took over 700 photos yesterday on one charge which I thought was mighty impressive.

The Canon 5D3 has its place and the quality of the photos is quite remarkable but it's just not practical to be lugging it around with the wife and kids in tow, plus the major expense and bulk of carrying around a 24mm-70mm f2.8 lens and the 70mm-200mm f2.8 lens.

The RX100 Mk3 is a superb bit of kit and takes much better quality photos than an iPhone and the majority of other compacts on the market, but I find I still tend to leave it at home in the summer because it's just a fraction too big to put in the back pocket.

The RX10 Mk3 will compliment the RX100 and the 5D3 for most of my walk-around photography. Should have bought one years ago!

Thanks, both. It does sound the best thing to do is visit a shop and handle a few of them.

Have a read of this thread for my recent move from Apsc to a Panasonic FZ2000.

So, I took the easy option and bought a super compact in addition to my DSLR.

Picked up a Sony RX100 IV in the amazon bank holiday sale (worked out at £410 after the cashback which I think was a good deal), and although it's only been a day, have been very impressed so far.

Cheers again for all the suggestions!
