Sony RX100 vi Announced
Discussion
I've long been a fan of the RX100, a small, genuinely pocketable camera with a decent image quality. I've had the Mk1 since 2013, and keep thinking about an upgrade.
One of the main things that the current models struggle with is a decent shallow depth of field, and the 70mm equivalent lens was never really going to do much to assist. However, I've just seen that the main improvement on the Mk 6 is a 200mm equivalent telephoto.

I think I'd better get saving up...

I've got the RX100 IV and my only real gripe with it is that I'd love a bit more reach than 70mm equivalent. However, at the short end, the lens will open to f1.8. The new model does f2.8 at the same focal length so, if you are looking for a shallow depth of field, won't you be worse off?
all zooms are very flawed in this sort of range
so you loose sharpness at the low and high end and loose the F1.8
seems daft, ! and a stupid price
I thought every one buys mirrorless now days any way, best move I did was a Mirrorless compact, small and it takes my L lens if needed.
Now just an expensive travel zoom , shame on you Sony, one to avoid at this price.

Second, It doesn't have F1.8
Thirdly. Read the reviews.

mirrorless with changeable lens like an SLR I should have said.Second, It doesn't have F1.8
Thirdly. Read the reviews.
correct, I said it's lost F1.8
reviews are poor, as you cannot have your cake and eat it, you even said you will carry the other one in your pocket !!
bit of a fail imo all round and a bit of a rip off.

It's only a rip off if it cost you money you can't afford and doesn't do what you expect. It won't cost me a penny and does exactly what I want.

Shame - that's really just not working at all is it
Reckon you can tell much of a difference over the earlier versions?
Well apart from the 200ness, the a/f is lightning quick, it does 4K vid and impressive slo mo, the menu system is better than Mk 3 (but still a bit pants), it opens up and closes down much faster, does 24 fps bursts, screen now a touch screen, and a few other nice details - opening up EVF (much better quality than the 3) turns camera on etc. etc.Reckon you can tell much of a difference over the earlier versions?
It's stupidly expensive, so unless people want the reach (which is why I bought it) I still think the earlier versions are better value (also letting in more light). But as you know I get VAT back and it's tax deductible, so price isn't much of an issue for me.
It is an astonishing bit of pocket sized kit,
.....considering my first camera looked like this (bought from a jumble sale in 1968):

A Free camera is always the best, but was a daft comment for effect on a forum as now you state "It's stupidly expensive" :-(HTH
Whatever. Be happy.

Reckon Torridon would look good even on a Box Brownie Steve! Quite tempted by one of these or something similar but as my current photo equipment is basically gathering dust at the moment it's probably not going to happen for a bit. I had an early version for a while and it could do the business but I weirdly found it almost too small and a bit fiddly to use - the concept is brilliant though. Look forward to seeing some more results on Tw@tter (if O2 ever get their act together!). Cheers It's stupidly expensive, so unless people want the reach (which is why I bought it) I still think the earlier versions are better value (also letting in more light). I hadn't realised this camera had been released. I have the Mk IV and skipped the V but have now today ordered the VI. The RX100 is great for when carrying a DSLR is just not feasible and I'm happy to sacrifice the low light 1.8 for greater range. I don't like to bring my DSLR kit to Amsterdam or to my In-Laws in Belgium with me every month and always have the little Sony on me instead. Also good for when out cycling or hiking light.
