i need a decent camera system for some stables which we can view from a phone or tablet on the move. the issue is that there is no internet where the building is so a traditional system wouldn't be suitable.

anyone have a recommendation for a sim based system or something that would be suitable?

thanks in advance.

There's a fairly limited choice when it comes to dedicated 3G/4G CCTV cameras. There are plenty of trail cameras but the picture quality and remote viewing features are limited.

The other option is to use a mobile WiFi hotspot like this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-M7350-Low-Cost-LT...

Then you can choose any pretty much any IP camera with WIFi connectivity and use them together.

I did this for an unoccupied house I needed to keep an eye on.

That looks like a better idea. It mentions an 8 hour usage - can’t I just leave it plugged in for permanent use?

That's what I did. I put a GIffGaff SIM in it and it cost me hardly anything as it was only streaming the video when I logged in to view it.

You might want to get a camera with built-in video recording onto a local SD card, so it automatically records on movement. That way if something happens when you're not watching you'll have it recorded and can retrieve it remotely or when you go back to it.

Thanks for that Freddy.

Any value in getting a 300mbps one?

Not if you're just going to use it for the camera, but if you think you'll use it for other things in the future it might.

Even on the very highest quality setting, a current HD IP camera is going to use maybe 16Mbps while streaming and usually 2Mbps is plenty to get a good picture.

Cheers.

Do you have a recommendation for an ip camera?

Do you need just a fixed view or to pan, tilt, zoom?
Do you need audio?
Night vision?
Does it need to be weather-proof?
How much do you want to spend?

Lots of choice when you look at IP cameras...

thanks again freddy -

fixed lens is fine. audio would be a bonus but not essential.
night vision would be a helpful but not essential.

thoughts?

ive ordered an m3750 and went with a foscam R2 camera. itll all be here on monday.

as simple as plugging the camera in, plugging the 3750 in, pairing and away we go?

i'll need to see which phone supplier is strongest at the stable first.

GiffGaff uses the O2 network in case you have an O2 phone you can try.

Foscam are generally good. I have 4 or 5 different Foscam models.
It's a while since I set up my MiFi but generally they are straightforward to get up and running.
If it has a WPS button, that's probably the easiest way to pair the camera to the MiFi.
If you need a good app to view the camera on your phone, I use the "IP cam viewer" app (by Robert Chou) which is very reliable.
