First camera for 10-year-old
Discussion
I've been wondering the same about my 9 year old - the Olympus tough does look good and I like the idea of a something very rugged, waterproof etc.
On the other hand she absolutely loves handling my Canon 5DS with a 24-70 f/2.8 under supervision and has taken some really nice pics with it, so I know if I get her too much of a 'toy' she won't be interested. I want something which can foster a growing interest in photography.
I have an old Lumix LX5 sitting around which in theory would be perfect given its near worthlessness, but unfortunately Wifi/NFC and easy integration with a tablet is also a must.

I was thinking about this at the weekend, my 6 year old loves taking photos and seems to have a fairly decent eye but the Kidizoom she currently has is woefully poor.
As she's younger I want as few options and buttons as possible (even less than the excellent looking Fuji above) so giving her one of my old compacts isn't really an option as she'll just mess with settings and have all kinds of madness happening. There just doesn't seem to be a simplified, robust, camera that doesn't output tiny postage stamp sized low-res images.

If she's like a typical 8 - 10 year old it needs to be tough with none of this retracting lens stuff, perhaps take a look at the FujiFilm FinePix XP120 Outdoor Camera - edited to add that it is available in different colours!
We have had one of these for about two and half years. It serves as my garage camera. I used it to document work on my Land Rover or any other garage projects. It's pretty robust, but to be honest, my phone takes a better photo and the only reason I keep using the Fuji is I don't want to get my phone out of my pocket and risk dropping it in wet paint/oil etc etc.

Mine has a d3100..he had been using an old bridge camera but out grew it. The d3100 can be had for £110 or so now and it's still perfectly capable
I bought one of these about 18 months ago and I'm really pleased with it. I have also used my friend's 5500 and the flip out screen is nice, but after that I struggle to tell the difference between the two. Gassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
