Will I see a marked improvement in picture quality moving from a RX100 Mk3 to a sub £1k DSLR?

Things I like about the RX; out of the box performance, easy to use menus, compact size, connectivity and decent night performance.

Things I don’t like; lack of zoom, barrel distortion, average screen and I find it tricky to take pictures of fast moving objects.

My reasoning behind the RX was its ability to capture great pictures with minimal manual input. Being an amateur photographer, that was important, and remains so to a lesser extent.

Size was important too however in its leather case it is still far too big to fit into my pocket. So the extra bulk of a DSLR around my neck won’t be a major issue.

I’m happy with the performance it has provided but I often get blown away by the quality of pictures on flickr, presumably taken on a DSLR. Higher resolution, brighter colours and ability to capture some epic pictures with a decent zoom.

Will I see a big step up in picture quality moving to a £1000 or so DSLR or will it be wasted on a an amateur who usually shoots in aperture priority?

Cheers.

I have a RX100M3 and I also have an Olympus EM5ii which is a little smaller than a DSLR as its "mirrorless micro four thirds" but takes much better low light and fast-moving stuff when using a nice prime lens. Easily inside your budget.

I'm a Fuji shooter and would recommend the system - maybe look at an X-T20?

Nothing wrong with aperture priority by the way!

ETA - you will see an decent improvement (eg Fuji colours are very good) but maybe not a transformation as the RX100 is a very competent little camera
