Hi All,

Over the last couple of years i've really gotten into photography, i bought a used Rebel XTi just to get me into the basics and have also taken the Jessops Level 1 course (I'm doing the Level 2 this weekend). After this course i'm feeling an upgrade will be on the cards.

My main interest is static but mostly moving motorsport photography, i'm finding the old Rebel is ok but getting a little slow for my needs. It can still take a reasonable picture but i feel i've outgrown it.

A couple of examples:

I want to stick with Canon as i have a 70-300mm lens i use for motorsport photography and i really like the Cameras. Im thinking of moving to a 50d, having used my fathers 40d a fair bit i really like the layout of the interface and the speed at which it can burst.

Let me know your thoughts, all input is appreciated!

Alex

My first DSLR. Went on to a 7D after that.

Hmm, perhaps you do need an upgrade - your lens must be a bit jaundiced ;-)

Just kidding, hope you don't mind the quick edit.

On second thoughts, that's given a bit too much prominence to the magentas.

50D is a good camera but a few generations out of date now - depends on budget but I'd be looking at a 70D or even just a 700D or some such - either would be a massive upgrade smile

I'd go to an XD or X0D series, rather than another XX0D body.

Thanks for that, im looking to spend about £350 max really.

My main priority is super fast focus, which i while i suspect a 50d would be a good step up from what i have may not be perfect. Would i be mad to consider going to a 1D MK II or MK III as surely this will give me everything i'd need?

Good cameras but again pretty long in the tooth - for your budget I'd have a 700D or maybe possible to get a 60D.

Nice cameras but they are, unlike your existing camera and the ones you are thinking about, full frame. Decide whether you want that before choosing a camera.

For a £350 budget it might be better to stick with what you've got until a 7D Mk2 is attainable.

Put the £350 towards a better lens.

I had a 1DMk2 in 2010 it felt old then! The auto focus was great on it though. If you want fast auto focus I’d be looking at a 7D, all you will get from a 50D etc is better ergonomics.

I agree that you’d be better off saving up more and/or getting better lenses.
