I've got a delightful Panasonic compact. At a birthday party it would appear that someone touched the lens a couple of times. I've just found it.

There is a smudge right across the lens, looks like chocolate, and it is apparent through the screen.

What's the best way of cleaning it.

Get some lens cleaning cloths - loads on ebay - with a bit of isopropyl alcohol if necessary.

Ah, sorry - thought this was a BBC spin off series from Strictly come dancing, with that nice Mr Goodman.

Thanks for that.

I've had decent cameras since I was in my 20s, that's over 40 years ago, I've never had to clean a lens. I've used ND filters but my compact doesn't take filters.

I always carry some Zeiss Lens wipes.

ASDA stock them if you've got one close:

Second this, its what Lens Rentals use and they are the experts. I buy them in 200 packs and use them on everything, computer screens, cameras, viewfinders, lenses.

Thanks for that, guys. I've always been scared of touching lens surfaces. I've wiped my neutral density filters with a glasses cloth, very lightly, and never had a scratch. One was broken once at Brands Hatch on Paddock Hill Bend. A car came off, threw a stone into the edge of the filter and it cracked. That was irritating enough, but I missed the shot as well. The bloke beside me had his glasses smashed, well one lens, and my face was peppered.

The stones have been removed since that time.
