Does anyone know what causes a video to suddenly "jump cut" (can't find a better word) as though the camera was stopped during recording and resumed recording half way through a scene, even though no pressing of the stop button was ever made. I have noticed this a few times (though not very often) not only with modern HD video cameras but also with Hi8 tape camcorders, so I can't imagine this being caused by the tape. It's often just a split second or a couple of seconds of a cut. Using an SD card as an example, if this was the result of pressing the stop button suddenly then quickly pressing the rec button, then the recording would just create a separate file as it recognises it as a separate recording, but this happens during the same recording.

Anyone experienced this?

Could it be the recording reaching the 4GB file size limit for the FAT32 format?

On SD recording, the most obvious answer would be too slow a card.

If this is something you are experiencing with tape as well, my guess would be that it’s a playback issue related to ram/drive access speed on the edit machine and you’re experiencing drop frames.

I’d try converting to proxy media or on a different machine to determine whether the error is embedded in the recorded material or just in playback.

Thanks for the advice. I will took into the playback through the camera itself to determine whether it's the file transfer or a recording issue.

I suspect that this happens during recording, so could a mechanism issue; in the case of the tape it could be the tape stops suddenly for a split second then resumes (maybe jamming) despite the recording light/button being in operation.

I had this problem with tape. I concluded it was something to do with the firewire connection, although one I was never able to eliminate. I noticed that if I downloaded it twice, the 'gap' didn't happen in the same place.

I've not noticed any identical problem on digital video, and I've done a fair few of those over the years. However, I would ensure that, as a previous poster has suggested, the memory card is of sufficient speed. I have a 4K video camera and there were problems with my slow card. Once upgraded to a 3 level card, everything was fine.
