Photo Gear in Hold Baggage Only!

If this spreads ......

I don't mind losing my gear on my return flight (assuming it's insured)
but I wouldn't want to lose it outbound.

Surely - if your camera is actually a bomb, it would be easier to detect it in your hand luggage
rather than your hold luggage?

If a bomb goes off in the pressurised bit of the plane it will probably bring it down. Much less likely in the luggage hold.

If it does spread it'll be a right pain for me as I almost never have hold luggage, just hand luggage.

I'm pretty sure that the Luggage holds are pressurised too on most airliners.

Yep.. all changed since I last looked. Though some are still not.

I have to say, the News this week were also saying that holds were not pressurised. They need to catch up too.

Then Fedex/DHL it, or hire once you get there? TBH I'm in the same boat, I'm going to think twice about taking any valuable gear with me if it'll end up in the hold. I'll throw a Sony RX100 and tripod in the luggage, and hope the tealeaves can't be bothered/don't see it.

It's not about the hold being pressurised or not. The containers that baggage is put into before loading onto the plane are designed to contain a limited explosion without causing a critical failure of the hull. A small bomb that could be contained within a DSLR body or iPad could, if placed against the side of the cabin, cause a catastrophic failure with an uncontained explosion.

Hopefully it'll stay limited to countries where the airport security measures are less reliable. I'm not sure if I'd bother going abroad if all kit had to go in the hold - far too much risk.

When I flew back from Corfu last September, I could have carried anything onto the plane, the woman who was watching (or supposed to be watching) the hand luggage scanner was looking out of the window and scratching her derriere while my bag went through.

How big is the battery in a DLSR? I wouldn't have thought it's bigger than a phone. I assume it's less than a laptop.

The bigger ones are about 2000-2500mah

So not massively bigger than a large phone battery, so likely less than the size of bomb they are worried about with laptop batteries.

Can't see this is a likely scenario, until they remove everybody's phone as well. Which would cause bigger issues I'd have thought.

I flew back from Ercan (north Cyprus) via a plane change (and security check) in Istanbul at the weekend...nobody was even aware the ruling and kept lap top and photo gear in hand luggage all the way.
