Wildlife / Trail Cameras
Discussion
I bought a HD Ltl Acorn 6210MM in April this year. Not cheap (£250) but had everything I wanted. I never got the sending of images via the sim card working but otherwise the camera worked well for a couple of months. After this it stopped working correctly and was eventually replaced. The replacement also had an issue where it stopped recording video at night so this was returned for a refund. I'll not name the supplier but if you want to know drop me a line. I wouldn't go near them again as getting my money back was a long process and I was out of pocket several times for postage. I needed to PayPal to take it up for me and they were very good fortunately.
I've been looking for a cheaper and more basic camera, with less to go wrong, but each time I find what appears to be a good one I read the reviews which are often bad and put me back to square one.
Hopefully someone will be along with more help and preferably a good recommendation so we can both get a new camera.

Amazon sell several types of HD wildlife cameras which can be set to take photographs or video when movement is detected. These are fitted with IR emitters so can work at night.
The camera below costs less than £75 though I am sure there are other types available.

I just bought that exact model to supplement an older Bushnell. The image quality in daylight is OK (nowhere near HD though) but it's no better than the 5 megapixel Bushnell at night. Maybe the focus is set for daylight and presumably infrared focusses differently to visible light. The camera below costs less than £75 though I am sure there are other types available.

Another problem is using rechargeable batteries. It takes 8 AA's and really seems to need close to 12v. It's OK for a day or two using 1.2v NiMH cells but then stops working at night; presumably the voltage has dropped below a threshold needed by the IR LED array. They claim up to 6 months per set of batteries - maybe with alkalines. You can use an external 12v supply.
The built-in screen is surprisingly good and helps alignment setup.
I've taken pot luck on this one:
