Which canon body next?

Had my 600D from new 18 months ago and want to upgrade it. Lenses I have are 15-85mm and 70-300mm USM.

Which would be my best option? 60D, 7D, 6D or 5D mk ii?

I mostly do Motorsport photography, oulton park, silverstone and wrc, and general walk around stuff. But would like to do more arty landscape and city shots, star/night photos eventually.

In a couple of months I want to buy a new long lens, 70-200L or 100-400L to replace the 70-300L.

I'm a bit confused with which lenses work with crop and non-crop bodies.

Will the 15-85mm work on a 6d or 5d mark ii as well as crop bodies? And will an L lens work on a 70D or 7D?

EF lenses work on all cameras, EF-S lenses work only on crop bodies.

L lenses are EF only so will work on all cameras

So, your 15-85mm won't work on a full frame camera - so no 6D / 5D2.

Tbh though, if you mainly do motorsports stuff then I'd probably stick to crop bodies with better AF systems

I've got a 7D. I've not tried either of the others, but the AF on the 7D is excellent. I'd think it would be a great option for Motorsport.

To take your thread totally off in a different direction, however, you say you're looking to sell your 70-300L in favour of a 70-200L or 100-400L. Could you say why?

I ask as I've been trying to make my mind up between a 70-300L and 100-400L and was veering towards the 70-300 (possibly with a 1.4x TC) as despite the shorter range, the IS is apparently much newer than that on the 100-400, and good for around 3 stops of stabilisation rather than 1 on the 100-400.

Apologies, I meant to say I was looking to sell the 70-300 USM, I don't own the 70-300L.

I was leaning towards the 70D after having a quick look at all 3, it is the newest, and also I saw the new video feature, what else would I notice? Much better ISO?

If your main hobby is motorsport, then stick with a cropped sensor because you'll get greater effective focal-length. the x0D range are probably the best bet there, unless you can afford the 7D...but I've heard that needs more manual driving / more P'shopping to get the best from it.

That said, I've noticed that my landscapes and portraits have extra "punch" with the 5D Mk1 full-frame I bought 2nd hand a year ago.

My other thought is that unless you want the live view and video and other 'gadgetry' of the newest crop of cameras, the additional Mp and focal points and fps are pretty much frippery for most of us and don't add anything over an e.g. 40D. Assuming you're happy to go for a 2nd hand body and spend more on the lenses, of course...

Unless there is something particularly wrong with your 600D I'd stick with it for now and buy the lens first. IIRC the sensors in the 600D, 60D and 7D are pretty much identical so you won't really see an uplift in image quality, the main benefits would be the controls, autofocus, FPS - things like that.

The rumour mill is spinning regarding a 7D mk2 in the near future so with a little bit of luck that would be out by the time you got to upgrading the body.

I shoot mostly in Live View and the 70D is great for this. Sensor wise is a bit better but not sure I would upgrade from a 600D just for the extra 2MP and slightly better ISO - but it's your money! For me it was a choice between 70D, 6D or Sony A7 - didn't really need the FF capability.

A more leftfield choice, I'd look out for a 1D Mk3 if you enjoy your motorsport, the AF and weathersealing will come in handy, you'll still need EF lenses but you'll not lose as much reach as going full frame (they're a 1.3x crop).

good point re weather resistance, kinda grates how your P&J can be knackered by a drop of moisture getting through a unsealed joint.
Esp when it's £000's of P&J....

I went for the 70D no regrets and think its a lot better than the 7D which is getting on a bit a now.
50 and 60D not that great, I went from a 40D to the 70D.

Definitely this!

If you don't need video 1D Mk3 is a much better camera than a 70D (I owned both)

What did you prefer about the 70D over the 7D?

When I was looking, the general sentiment seemed to be to go for the 70D if you were going to be shooting lots of video, and the 7D if you weren't. I wasn't, so went for the 7D, and haven't regretted it.

Having said that, I was upgrading from a 450D, so I'm sure either would've been immense in comparison!
