500px - Whats the point?

Hi guys,

Am i missing something here? I've just started a 500px account and im struggling to understand what the point of it is?

It seems to want to guide me towards paying for a membership and it doesnt support anything but .jpg files?


I dont see why anyone would want to use this over Flickr, but if im missing something please fill me in

Well, it looks nicer....and if you pay, you get a nice website layout. I like the idea of it being more selective than flickr (i.e. encouraged to upload only your best photographs as opposed to flickr which is pretty much a dumping ground for many people) and it generally shows in the high standard of work. But TBH I got a bit disillusioned with it since the 'scoring' system just turns it into a popularity contest, which you will only win by spending 24hrs a day liking and making banal comments on tens of thousands of other peoples pictures....

I loathe Flickr and I really like 500px. I only use Flickr to store photos really. 500px has a much cleaner design, has a higher average picture quality (in my opinion) and it much easier to browse. It also offers a very good portfolio service.

Flickr is an utter mess populated by acres of spam and self promotion.

That's how I see it anyway.

I didn't have the time or see the point in using both so I ditched 500px in favour of Flickr. Yes 500px has a higher standard but compared to Flickr it doesn't (or at least didn't) have much in the way of community just endless comments along the lines of 'nice photo look at mine please'

At the end of the day it's just personal preference, each to their own, horses for courses etc etc

Exactly the same reason i stopped using 500px.

I dont really get anything from any of them, 500px when it started seemed to be a bit elitist and self congratulatory which I guess appeals to some in the same way as being published in Vogue Italia does (they publish pretty much anything now)

Far as community goes, the best I've found has been Facebook Groups and your own personal blog. There's too much choice and too many platforms to update, at least with one blog/webspace you have more control over it and can feed it out to different sites if you want to.
