Recommend a lens for Landscapes

After a couple of years not having much time for the camera, I'm determined to make 2014 different.
To that end I want to focus on landscapes and have a little money in the kitty to buy a new lens.
Now I'd love a 17-40 L but the kitty, well, she won't stretch that far.
Can anyone recommend me a good alternative with the following criteria:
Canon fit - obviously
Must fit a full frame camera as it'll be going on a 1d mk2
Budget £250 to £400(ish)
New or used.

I thought used 17-40 was about £400? Perhaps just a bit more..... BTW, 1D mk2 isn't a full frame camera.

Edit: Ok, 17-40 is around £450-500 but I found a 17-35L f2.8 for £400. Is it any good??

Does it have to be Canon and have autofocus? One of the Samyang / Rokinon lenses maybe?

I have a Canon EF 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM I'm about to put up for sale if you are interested? It's no "L" lens but it's a useful zoom range and pretty sharp. Would be significantly under budget as well...

I'd suggest one of the following for landscapes:

Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC HSM
Canon EF-S 10-22mm USM

A new Sigma is within budget. It would need to be a second hand Canon though.

I have the Sigma and its a great lens for landscapes. I have a 450D so just make sure they fit the full frame camera.

Not sure about the Sigma, but the Canon 10-22 definitely won't fit. it needs to be an EF (not EF-S) mount.

The Sigma will physically mount but will only project a circular image in the middle of the frame at the wide end. Sigma full frame lenses are designated DG rather than DC

Another vote for the 17-40 here, it is a good combination with the 1DII.

Right, a little more time to think now the mornings idiocy on site is dealt with.

I may have been a little generous in describing the 1d Mk2 as full frame, but it certainly isn't the APS-C sensor of my 450D.

The lens I go for has to fit on both cameras, so EF-S lenses are out.

It looks like a used 17-40L is not too far out of my price range, so I reckon I'll trim the fat elsewhere and plump for one of those.

I actually preferred the 17-40mm 1.3x crop than on full frame.

The 1D mk II is an APS-H sensor which is a 1.3 crop hence a 17-40mm effectively becomes a 22-52mm. Still the lens to go for I'd say.

The nice thing about the 17-40 on that body is that it goes someway to remove the softness you can get at larger apertures, so I found anyway!

can often pick them up for under £400 used

24-105 is great on FF I agree, but I didn't find it wide enough for landscapes on a 1.3x crop camera, like the OP is asking about.
