Is there a device that allows transfer from card to device?

Just an example, not a recommendation...

I had something similar but stopped using it a few years ago. I found it easier to carry lots of cards instead of carrying another fragile toy.

What sort of device with HDD storage?
If something with a USB connector and some software to manage the downloads then you can obtain various types of inexpensive card adapters to plug into it. How you control the transfer is another matter.
There are (or were) a few devices that were dedicated to the task of transfer and storage, mainly intended for use by photographers requiring dedicated portable storage on the move. I don't remember seeing any mentioned as 'must have' devices for a few years now. Presumably the concept still exists although ever cheaper memory cards and the potential for widespread Wi-Fi connectivity may have reduced demand somewhat.

I had a little portable drive that you could plug your CF card (or other I think) into and it would download and store it. This was a few years ago now, and I think my brother nabbed it and doesn't use it. Battery went flat I think.
I would like something again for holidays etc. when I don't want to take a laptop, but I'm not sure how decent these things are these days. I found a few here. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Stand-Alone-Data...
But to be honest, I think it would be cheaper and more reliable to buy a few extra memory cards now!

Yes op, these exist. It's like a portable hdd enclosure which includes a battery and card reader. Pop the memory card in and hit a button and it will download the contents of the card to a new folder on the drive. You can then put the card back in the camera and keep shooting. Great for holidays when you don't want to take a laptop but where you'll fill more than the cards you own. Do also consider just buying more flash memory cards, as this may be better depending how much you need to shoot before returning to base.
Having looked at a few online, in particular the NEXTO range, it looks like video tanks are quite expensive.
I've been asked a few times for something that would allow the transfer of pictures/video from GoPro cameras and as memory cards are quote expensive in general terms for these I guess it would make sense for certain people who would need a lot of cards.
