EOS300 D / 75-300 Zoom Problem.

I have an EOS300D purchased 2nd hand a couple of years ago, which is fine, couple with the standard Canon "small" lens. I also last year whilst on holiday, brought a Tamrom 75-300 lens.
I have an issue with the long lens, in that it will periodically display "Error 99", and will not play again until the lens is removed, the camera rebooted, which over the last few months, I have got down to a fine art, but ideally would like to get fixed. I had it suggested that I clean the contacts on the lens with a pencil eraser, but this did not help.
Any thoughts from the collective please?

Was the lens bought new or second hand?
If it only happens with the zoom, it suggests the problem lies in the lens.
Do you know anyone else with a body you can try it on?
All the kit is 2nd hand. I will probably just pop into a camera shop when I have some free time and ask them to try it. I agree that the zoom is the problem though.If it only happens with the zoom, it suggests the problem lies in the lens.

Just wondered if it was something that really common, and I had just not heard of it.
If you Google a suitable search you should find quite a lot of references, new and old, with similar tales. There is a discussion on Flickr for example.
Your call on interpretation but if it is just the Tamron lens then it sort of suggests lens rather than body and may even be something that occurs in specific circumstances - over a certain zoom range for example.

Had this problem with the same lense on a 350d.
Error 99 is a catch all error (not something covered by any of the other 98 or the camera just can't tell)
For me it was intermittent and eventually found it was sticking aperture blades. If you used it wide open it was fine. stopping down at all caused it to error (most of the time)
Looked at the cost of repair and ended up replacing it. had a fair bit of use so think I got my moneys worth out of it.
