...and a bloody good job too. I always look forward to today. Not a bad winter, but sick of long dark nights. Having said that, give me winter over summer every time - photographically speaking.

I guess it'd have to be Easter or Whitsun then... lots more cars on the road, but much less rain. (Usually!)ETA - re Midges. They can be dreadful, or you might not see them at all. It's completely weather dependent. If it's dry, sunny, windy - or if you are in an exposed place, top of a hill, beach etc - then you'll be fine. They also tend to be bad first thing in the morning and in the evening. Even on bad days they usually sod off mid morning to late afternoon.
However, If it's damp, or still and humid, and you're outside - you're for it.
I guess there are half a dozen days each summer which are so bad that 'normal activity' is compromised. 4 or 5 of those days will often be in August!

Those pictures are fantastic! Love the one of the highland cow and the beach with the multiple wave lines.
Is there a particular technique involved in getting such clear reflections in the water - i'm guessing a long exposure with ND filters to smooth out the image? Or is the water just that clear?
To be honest, it's just personal opinion but the reflections are almost too perfect for my taste. I'd like to see a bit of the colour of the actual water. Then again I got my first SLR a couple of months ago so what do I know...

t we've had for weeks and will continue to have it seems.Steve, one thing August has in its favour is the chance of seeing whales (from what I've read) I saw Minke whales off Neist Point one September, any idea how common they are in summer?
Also, your double otter photo, is that a reasonable occurrence?

The otters live at the bottom of our garden, so we see them all the time. The Seaflower sees whales occasionally. ... Right place, right time thing. Also, your double otter photo, is that a reasonable occurrence?

Rub it in why not!Thanks for the answers to my questions, unfortunately August is the only time we can come and midges (plus other tourists!) rule that one out, Easter is out due to other commitments. Looks like another October half term trip to the western coast is on!
The Seaflower runs most days from Shieldaig until end Oct... it's well worth a trip out. Kenny (who runs it) was a fisherman for 30 years, so if there's a whale to be seen, he'll know where to find it!

Macs do Flash, iDevices don't, which may've been what you were trying to imply by using the general term "Mac".

Well yes and no. My Apple Mac Pro Desktop won't load the website using Safari without installing plug ins.What version OS are you on? That'll affect what Safari revision you might be able to update to.
What plug-ins are needed?
OS X.6.8 (last Snow Leopard update) here and all I have is Flash installed.
I also have Safair extensions - Click To Flash, but it didn't give me a Flash frame like you get on some videos, so it just went straight to downloading the data, then displayed in the tab opened.

OS 10.something. It cost me £6k about 5 months ago. Doesn't run flash without installing plug-ins (I hardly ever use Macs to surf, as I keep them just for work, so can't be arsed to install stuff)What plug-ins are needed?
