I was thinking of spending a couple of hundred on a used Canon 400D as a first DSLR, then I saw that for not much more I can get a new 1100D.

So, which would you recommend?

As much as I like my 400D, they are getting on a bit. On paper there isn't much between it and the 1100D, but in reality they are very different animals.

The 1100D will kick the 400Ds arse when it comes to noise and virtually everything else. The only thing that the 400D does better is continuous RAW shooting as the 1100D is deliberately crippled.

I took a photograph the other evening, portrait of one of our cats and the 400D struggled with the lack of light, the 1100D would have given me 2 stops extra with the higher ISO available (which I needed for a faster shutter because cats don't keep still). The difference is a really nice portrait that I can't enter into a local competition and one that I could have.

As a minor point, imo build quality on the 400D is better.

Would not disagree there!

I have to admit that I'm torn about getting an 1100D for the coming year for my work. It's not the body that counts at the end of the day, it's the glass, and I'm down to 2 favourite lenses for that. The only thing that doesn't do it for me is frames per second (I really do need 6, and a custom mode would be nice).

They are the only two features I really do need which means I'll probably have to head onto a s/h 50D body.

So, erm, out of interest, what's the 'going rate' for a used 60D? wink
