Canon EOS 1100D - good or no?

In the mood to splash some cash on a DSLR, as phones sometimes just done cut the mustard. Went onto Curries, and they came up with a Canon EOS 1100D with two lenses for under £400, which I though was pretty good.

Main use will be snaps at home, some holiday use (skiing, beach holidays, usual stuff really), good photos of stuff for ebay, maybe some landscape shots as I see some interesting views when I'm out with the dogs - just this week I had an amazing view over brum with the low clouds, rain, yet some buildings really stood out and the gas tanks looked like they'd come from another planet, but my camera phone was st at capturing it, so a great moment lost.

I can get the same off ebay for under £350, so is it worth the money or is there a better option???

Soz - meant £300 for the camera with 2 lenses

But is it any good or are there better models/makes for the same money: the reviews seem good, but a PH recommendation would be nice ...

Direct competitor to the 1100D is the Nikon D3100.

I've got an 1100D, and apart from the build quality feeling a little 'cheap' and plasticy, the camera itself is great. I believe it uses the same sensor as the 550/600D so IQ is comparable. I'd have no hesitation in recommending it, and at those prices it's a steal.

Sounds pretty good for your uses



...plus if (when) you spend waay too much on lenses it'll be compatible with other 'EF mount' cameras in the Canon range

Looks like it's the US Rebel T3, so there may be warranty issues?


Does seem a lot for the money though - think the 55-250 is around £150 new.

Try to find a Comet store with stock, they are letting them go pretty cheap now, plus there is cash back from canon, which is available on a proper UK supplied camera.

^ if you can get near the same price for the 18-55 IS & 55-250 IS then I'd probably go with that

Don't know if it's a good deal, but it's a good camera. The only reason I'm not going to one is fast RAW shooting. Other than that, it pretty much has everything.

Well, got it yesterday and started looking through the manual - fk me there's a lot of stuff it can do!!! Now for some practising.

Don't be over-faced by all the options, you'll get into a way of working that suits you

Enjoy, even the lowest dSLR these days is more than enough for amazing pictures, it's when you decide how much you need mega expensive glass you regret getting into photography lol

Just to bump this a little.
I currently have a 550D which I share with someone else and will soon be going to them.
I have a 10-22, 55-250 and tripod etc, so a replacement DSLR makes sense.
The 1100D seems a decent price, but would I feel short-changed after 2 years shooting with a 550D?
Interested in experiences of those who've had/used both models or Canon equivalents.

Depending on budget, but if you're in the £300-400 ballpark, then I would have thought a pre-owned 50d is another option, if it has features benefits you'd make use of/desire going forward.
In my mind, the 1100d is a bit too Tesco Value compared to the xx0d and x0d.

Take a look on DPReview for comparison ISO, etc between them, and see if one makes more of a case for itself than the others.
