Canon Macro lenses & flashes - I'm confused

Evening all,

I have a Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro lens, and an MR-14EX ring flash. The lens has a 58mm diameter, and the flash fits onto the end of it. As far as I'm aware, the MT-24EX is the same size?

As such, I was expecting the 100mm L macro lens to be the same size (to take the flashes) but it's not; it has a 67mm diameter, and the 180mm L lens is larger again at 72mm.

The obvious question that springs to mind is just how Canon expect L glass owners to fit a flash?

You should have adapter rings, or at least my flash came with a plethora of different sizes.

Rob is right - I upgraded from a 100 to a 100L and needed an adapter ring in order to fit my mt24. Only another £30 or so

But I've got the smallest of the three lenses, and the MR-14EX fits straight onto it without any adapter rings. Surely such adapters could therefore only fit the flash to smaller lenses than mine, not larger?

Bloody hell! Only just a bit of a rip off!

What I still don't understand is if the flash sits perfectly on my smaller lens, how come it wouldn't obscure the outer edges on the bigger lenses?

If they are the same as 'step down' rings you might find generic versions for less.
