Tripod Matters

Gents - after some tripod recommendations please. What I want is a relatively small/portable tripod but it must be able to go right down to ground level. Not bothered about a fancy head. My current tripod is really nice and light but doesn't go all the way down (so to speak)

PS - I can take the central shaft out of my current one and reverse it but it's a faff and the camera ends up upside down which is a double faff as I can never find the right buttons!

Thanks for the sensible suggestion (take note you other twonks) - I have considered one of these but I'm not sure it would give enough control for me, for instance shooting a bridge when the waves are starting to lap around your feet!

I have a Manfrotto 190XPRO3.

It's carbon, light and goes down to floor level.

Ignore the muppets and buy that one!

My red snapper goes flat, and came with a shorty adapter so the camera will be about 3 and a bit inches off the floor.

Thanks - that looks more like it! So if you put the central column horizontal does the head adjust so that the camera can point horizontally? Come to mention it what head do you use?

No problems and it also fits in my suitcase when I go on holiday!

Your feet and your camera if, by whatever means, you get the thing low enough.

So, you may also need an underwater casing ..... Finding one that allows the (effective) use of filters may be a challenge.

FWIW as a general observation ... I have a couple of Giottos tripods and they are well thought out. No idea if they have one that suits your needs exactly but if you find something that looks interesting within their product range I think you should be able to trust the product quality.

Thanks Mark Well that's certainly a lot cheaper than the Manfrotto! As above I can't be doing with reversing the central column so it's a question of whether it would go low enough

For low level bird and wildlife photography, I've seen several recommendations for a product called a skimmer groundpod. Seems Giottos do a couple of models that might suit - slightly different weight/working height and load capacity. Supplied in kits with 3 way heads. Example below.
