Cropping to smaller size in Photoshop Elements 10?

I've recently got Photoshop Elements 10 and am gradually figuring it out, however there's one bit that has me foxed.

I can crop, that's fine, but when I crop (lets say I crop out half of a photo to "zoom in" on the middle bit), the bit I'm left with jumps up to the original size of the photo.

What I'd like to do is crop and be left with the size of the bit I've cropped, so if I've cropped out 50% then end up with a photo half the original size.

I've tried the tutorials but none I've found seem to mention this.

Any one know how to do it?

Don't have Elements 10 to check - but is it actually increasing the 'left over bit' or is it just resetting your zoom level?


If it's actually stretching the image up then check it's not cropping to specific dimensions / dpi ?

It might say "Crop 4inch x 6inch 300dpi" - just delete the values for "4" and "6"

It's definitely resizing the image as, if I save it, it's the same size as the uncropped image.

I'll try what you suggested.

Have you got 'Aspect Ratio' = 'Use Photo Ratio' ?

Any other value should stop it doing this I think (eg 'no restriction' as FPC suggests).

Yes I have as I want the cropped image to be at a photo ratio, just cropped to smaller size.

No problem at all.

I've only just got it although I did go on a day course prior to getting it.

It seems excellent and I think, easy to use although struggling with this issue a little.

Drag your crop box to the right size over the image.

Somewhere in the menus will be Select... inverse.

Do that, then either press delete or fill with whatever colour you choose.

I picked it up a few months ago. I'm very much an amateur but it does everything I need it to and once you get your head round the basics it's easy to use.

Just tried that but "inverse" is not a select-able option...

Not quite sure why you would want to keep the reduced size?

I think these days most people refer to “size” when talking about either file size or pixel count rather than physical dimensions.

Is it for printing or some other form of display?

Ok, the photos are taken at the biggest and highest quality the camera will do, and I actually want the photos to be about 25% of the size they are to go onto a web site (for faster loading and to take up less space).

Now I can simply reduce the image size by making them 25% of what they are now.

However the photos are of surfers who are quite a long way out, so since I want smaller images, but wish the surfers were bigger, if I can simply crop the sea around them out a bit, and keep a photo shape ratio, then bingo!

Hence using the photo ratio tool in Photoshop in conjunction with cropping.

Trouble is, all that happens is the cropped photo re-expands to the original size, making it too big and losing quality.

Test:

Set your zoom level to 25% in the navigator

Do the crop

Check the zoom level in the navigator

Is it still at 25%?

I think I see what you are getting at. Bear in mind the physical dimension size of a digital photo you see on your monitor is relative to the screen or viewer you are using. Photoshop will return the image to whatever the default setting is on the organiser (Either fit to screen/ photo size/full screen etc)

Have you saved the cropped photo (after its been cropped) ?

The size on a website is normally something determined by the how the website is created. I use a Website creation programme that allows me to resize images to fit he space available.

I like it a lot. It's certainly got all the bits and pieces I need. Full-fat Photoshop is the far side of £600; Elements is £80.

Even man-maths doesn't enable me to justify that.

But also consider that Adobe usually update about every 12 months so Element 11 should surface (I think) about September time
