Canon EOS 1Ds MkII vs new DSLR

Hi,

I am completly new to photograpy, I have been offered a Canon EOS 1Ds MkII at around £800 including a couple of good lenses.

Would you go for the Canon or consider something like the Nikon d3200 instead. Or any other alternative.

1Ds mk2 is a pretty serious bit of kit Fairly old in terms on sensor design, but the autofocus will be great if you are looking at doing stuff like motorsports.


What lenses are included? A 1Dsmk2 & lenses might be a decent buy

1D11n is pretty ancient. 6mp, 8fps?

Still a decent sports cam if you dont want to print large, and its built like a tank.

For almost any other situation a 60d or 7d will kick its arse

800 pounds is a pretty good price for that camera and could be fantastic depending on what the lenses are. I'd buy it, see how you go with it and if you don't like it you can always sell it on without losing anything.

1DsmkII , still built like a tank, somewhere between the 5d and 5d2 in terms of performance, better af etc. no live view I think>

Don't under sell that beast, it's got 8.2mp, not a mere 6!!!

As far as the 1DS2 goes, mine arrived last Friday, haven't had a chance to try it out properly yet, but just mucking about in the house, it's certainly a step up from the original 1DS and my 1D2N. Can't compare to modern stuff unfortunately as I'm stuck in the mid 2000's

a 'couple of good lenses' could well be worth a lot more than the asking price without the camera. Potentially a bargain. Tell us what the lenses are and you'll get some feedback. If it were me I'd be asking questions about ownership of the equipt, e.g. how many shutter clicks on the camera, any replacement shutters or other parts fitted, is the seller a member of the Canon Professional Services? Very much like buying a car, do your homework on the model before you go to see it, examine it thoroughly and ask a lot of prepared questions.

I had a 1Ds and then a 1Ds2, the 1Ds2 is a good bit of kit, very good AF, built like a tank, good IQ and high very clean up to ISO1600.

Make sure you get a battery charger (it sounds obvious but a replacement is £100+). They're a weighty beast but well balanced. Batteries give well over 1000 shots between charges, 7dayshop does compatibles for about £17, I ran 6 of them without issue or failure.

No liveview and the screen is smaller than more modern cameras but still a very capable camera.

Shutters are rated to 200,000 shots, a replacement from Canon Elstree is around £220 +VAT.
