Dying bath water

Hi guys.

Doing a set of photos for a friend on Monday but we've come across a problem when writing ideas down. We want to do some shots where they're almost underwater, but we want to colour the water to hide the hideous pink bath. We're after a deep blue or something. Question is, how would you recommend dying the water without ruining the surface of the bath? I thought about food colouring but I'm not sure if it would stain.

Anyone on here had any experience with this or can you recommend something to use? I'm stuck!

food colouring will be fine, we use it in the whirlpool baths in our showroom, have done for years, never had a problem and these baths can be worth over 5k?

It's quite an old house.

Not my bath and if I 'paint' it either with dye that won't come off or by lashing some Dulux on it, I'll get the arse kicking of a lifetime from the bath owner. The photo subject still lives at home so it's not their bath to destroy.

will be fine, sometimes it gets splashed neat on the bath whilst putting it in, it just washes off!

I just had an even better idea... using 'hue' in PS you can probably turn pink to blue anyway. To avoid tedious cutting out, find the equivalent colour for the subject and find one in that colour. Shoot the pink bath and opposite-coloured subject, then convert in PS...

If you have a person in the bath won't the colouring stuff also colour the person? (I am assuming from your original outline description that they wall also be in the bath.

I would think Simpo's idea could work ... Pink Screen rather than Green Screen? ... but may be a challenge without serious PS work as you are also dealing with skin tones. (Assuming the person and the bath are interactive. The top of the bath above the water may be a challenge depending on your planned shots.

If you could get something to line the batt and cover any exposed area it might be advantageous. I'm thinking something like the blue 'rubble bags' you can get for diy use. Quite a deep blue and quite thick polythene. Should be possible to line the bath with some of that material I would have thought.

there is a spray on rubbery coating called plasti-dip, it can be bought in a rattle can. its waterproof and peels off without leaving a residue, google for more info!

Instead of water, you should use 50 bottles of blue Gatorade.
