How about the shutter/mirror assembly failing on their (out of warranty) dslr the day before a weeks holiday in one of the most photogenic parts of the country (lake district.)

Luckily i have borrowed a 400d off my Mum so will still be able to take some photo's, and the camera is being sent off for repair.
c'est la vie.

thanks.Actually my boss has very kindly said he will pay for the repair, as i have been using the camera in the studio for the last year or so! Which is a good result! Would have been about £140 otherwise.

Yes i was thinking that, before doing a once in a lifetime thing like a wedding maybe!
If the shutter should fall out of my camera halfway through a wedding I just get the spare camera from the car (which is set up identically)

More of a nightmare is to be halfway through the day and realise it's set to JPG...

The Wifebeast did that recently. We spent a week in Torridon and she took some of the best stuff stuff she's ever done. Gave me her camera to download when we got home and I discovered that she'd fiddled with something she shouldn't have at the beginning of the trip and changed the quality setting on her 400D from RAW to Medium JPG

Print quality at A3 still seems reasonable enough though.
