Nikon D80 Advice Please...

I have a D80 which I am no expert on as I inherited it from my dad a few years ago. Over the weekend it developed a fault where on switching on, it just flashes ERR in the LCD display on top.

Any ideas on fault finding on these models? Or is it a case of taking to Ron Harrisons in Sheffield?

Not sure specifically but try another lens (might be a contacts issue) and battery and memory card.

If you have the manual there will be a troubleshooting guide in the back which might have other ideas.

D80 is a great camera. I love mine. Not the newest model but very much a good one.

Lens issues usually give the reading "F --" in the top RHS of the screen. "Err" will probably be something else (but not definitely.) Try a new memory card and remove and re-charge the battery. Make sure the reflex mirror hasn't jammed up and that there isn't a button stuck down. Try resetting it (two buttons marked with the waste bin at the same time for 5 seconds, or something like that.)

A bit strange really. The camera fires, with and without the lens in place. When I half depress the shutter button, the bit that shows remaining shots flashes r09.

ETA...r09 is the amount of pics allowed in the buffer. Not an error code.

Check the aperture rng on the lens is set, you can lock it to it's lowest (highest) aperture and the error should go away. Your focus adjustment may also be set to Release rather than Focus

Make sure you eliminate contacts issues. If you try several lenses it might narrow it down to one of them, or it might be the body.

Even new Nikons have the occasional tendency to need a clean. There are rumours they start off with a coating from the factory. It can't take much for the already coated contacts to oxidise.

When I got my new body I immediately gave it the DeOxit treatment as a precautionary - and I have never had the issue!

I find the lens/body contacts are usually fine, but the hotshoe/flash lead/flash contacts certainly need cleaning regularly or the flash starts behaving oddly - a favourite trick being to go off full blast yet miss the shutter opening...
