Actually. Yes. That's one of the few types of image that does work. I quite like it - you could flog it through Athena or the like, people still like posters like that! And I quite like it

Spot colour is a well-known watering stop on the famous graph; in fact I can hear the guard saying 'This is Spot Colour. Change for HDR and Panoramas'. BUT if done well to a suitable starting image I think it can work well - so it's as much about what you choose and how you do it as anything. The above image has a strong compostion and the red poppy whacks you between the eyes so I don't think I'd want it on the wall, but it certainly has impact!

Personally, I find it can be successful if you don't bleach all the colours out to B&W, just peg them back a little. You still get that 'punch' to your selected colour but it doesn't become a 'technique' picture...
That said, it's all personal preference - best to make the pictures you actually like

Spot colour can work (and does in this one) but like all the instagram crap as soon as its oevr used your eyes just flick pask

I am not really qualified to comment, but I was curious, do people think it would be better or worse if only the main poppy was spot coloured?

That was my first thought. For me the other reds around the photo detract from the main subject.

I would say they all need to be red - otherwise an image where some poppies are red and some are grey is illogical.

Mind you grey wheat is illogical but you get the point! The real saving grace of ths image is the composition.

I must admit that, over the past 4 years of photography, I have succumbed to it, albeit in a limited fashion:








It's something I do every now and then - and sometimes I do it and think - WTF... Admittedly I know these could be better as the first was done on my iPhone and the last with PS4 - the rest were with lightroom.

It's fun and entertaining - for me anyway

Much prefer that one. IMO, the spot colour one looks gloomy and depressing by comparison. That lovely blue sky makes the colour picture so much nicer.
