Can anyone give me a little advice buying a £250 HDcamera

I'm looking to purchase a HD video camera.
It will be used to capture family moments, as I have a new son, but will also be used to record in car footage on the odd trackday.
After reading reviews on WHICH the SD90 was top of my list as it is now down to just over £200. It looks to have been nearer £500 on original release.
I know that it's an older model, but is there anything out there that is better at that price point? The Panasonic HC-V100 I was shown today was £229 and I think despite being a newer model, was a less capable camera.
