Which lens for Goodwood Festival of Speed

Hi,

I'm going to the Goodwood Festival of Speed at the end of June and would be interesting in which lens to take.

I would like a single lens so I don't have to change during the day or miss a shot because I have the wrong lens on the camera.
I have a Canon 60D with 15-85mm lens which should be great for taking shots in the pits, but would it be too short for taking shots of cars going up the hill?

If I need a longer lens for action shots of cars going up the hill which single lens would you recommend that I hire for the day?

I usually take two - 24-70 and 70-200.

For a single lens solution you could do worse than consider the 24-105 Canon L series. Wide enough to do static shots and just about long enough, maybe with a bit of cropping, to cover distant shots. It's a very sharp lens, has IS, and although max aperture is f/4, you don't really need anything faster as it's nearly all outdoors. That would be my choice.

If you're not looking for pro standard results try a Tamron 18-270 - it's not fast but with a stop or two on it's nice and sharp (Just whack up the iso if needed - on a 60D you'll get away with it easily )

It's relatively small and light and has a big range obviously. Clearly it's not going to produce the image quality of the other lenses mentioned but more that acceptable for an amatuer in my opinion

You can get relatively close to the cars as they run up the hill at the FoS, compared to other motorsport events, so I wouldn't worry too much about the length unless you really want to fill the frame with the car. I'd say 15-85mm on a 60D would be a good bet if you only want to take one lens, otherwise I'd hire a 70-200mm as well.

What about the Canon 28-300mm L as single lens solution?

If not I might have to re-consider my initial plans and take a 70-200mm L in addition to my 15-85mm.

I used my 100-400 pretty much exclusively once I reached the hill. It was also useful in the forest for the rally cars.

I did not need the 400mm end all the time, but I did use it more than I expected.

I have a 24-105, but I only used that for the static stuff.

Last time I used my 24-105 for static stuff and 70-200 for the hill, if I had to choose just one I'd stick with a 70-200

Thank you everyone for the very helpful responses, I've decided to hire the 70-200mm lens so that I am covered for both static shots in the pits and action shots going up the hill.

I hired the 100-400mm lens last weekend for the DTM at Brands Hatch which was very impressive. I still need to sort through the photos which is a job for this coming weekend, but here is an action shot of the BMW:
