Photography Courses

Evening folks. You may have seen my previous rambling threads on this section where I mentioned how I picked up a Sony Nex5n compact system camera. Only trouble is I still don't know how the hell to use it to its fullest

I have had a flick through Understanding Exposure and the guide that Simpo Two kindly emailed to me. However I think I need more hands on/one to one tuition so I can finally figure out how to use the thing in a mode other than iAuto or one of the pre programmed ones. I suppose it doesn't help that I don't have a great deal of spare time to get out and use the sodding thing, that combined with the poor weather means it has had very limited use since purchase.

That leads me on to this thread. I have had a look around for photography courses but there seem to be quite a few around so don't know which one to go for. Can anyone reccomend a course for a relative beginner that is based in the Yorkshire region? Leeds would be ideal but I don't mind travelling.

I did a one day course with Jessops which I felt was worth while. Not cheap though. My other suggestion would be to look for local photographers who offer maybe one to one tuition, again not cheap but got me off auto settings onto manual.

Does the local adult education lot have any photography courses? I'm doing a City and Guilds Photoshop course through Norfolk Adult Education, they also do general photography.

I missed out on the start dates for the local college ones. Had a look at Jessops plus a few photographers who offer tuition etc but without any feedback from people who have been on the courses its hard to know which one to go for.

I think a good book or magazine (or online tutorials) would be more than enough. You'll save so much money which you can spend it on gears.

What kind of photography interests you? I run workshops and offer 1:1 tuition mostly around dance and model photography but I do have a Nex-7 and I've had folks come from as far away as Scotland and Cambridge to the workshops.

Unless you are a bit of a tecnhnophobe I really think you could come along leaps and bounds by reading things online, buying the right magazines and trial and error.

Though, I guess it depends what you're hoping to shoot. Properly good portraits take a lot more knowledge than just about camera settings.
