A totally random set of images - C&C welcome please

Hi Guys,

I consider myself to be a total amatuer really (as an example, I edited some of these pics with Windows Photo Viewer!)

I have a Canon 500D and I took all these pics below with my 50 mm F/1.4 USM lens. (I also have the 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM for everyday shooting)

Just looking to get some general feedback so I can hopefully improve my skills a little!

Saying you consider yourself to be a total amateur, I think your underselling your self. Some of those are fantastic.

The ones that do it for me:

1.) The Rowing Boat - To me it has nice composition and the way the rope leads you into the photo is great.
2.) The Feet and Red shoes - The first one of the two you did I quite like, not so certain of the crop on the second one you did.
3.) Sand - Nice DOF on that one, shows off the interesting layers of how the wind and sea have effected it's shape

The first one with the Poppy, I like concept behind it.. but for me the focus should have been more on the poppy than the wood, perhaps taken from the other side? That's just my opinion though.

Agree great set of images, I do like the poppy one a lot. The sand layer one I feel is a little underexposed but that would be probably the harshest criteque I would give

Many thanks for the feedback - my girlfriend wanted a couple of the above pictures put on canvas (the beach one with the wood steps & the one with the tree touching the waterline)

The reason why I consider myself to be an amatuer is really beacause I find myself looking at the pre-set shooting modes for a rough quide for ISO, Exposure & Shutter settings, before then setting them in manual mode. I dont fully understand the science behind the various settings, and I sometimes get mixed results as a conseqence. I do however think that I have a good eye for a photo.
