Why do people say this? Makes me so angry.

Surely in reality it doesn't matter one bit what camera you've used to get a great photo. Whether a stunning image is captured using a point and shoot or a top end DSLR and the best optics, it's still a great image.

Too many people are too hung up on the equipment used IMO when looking at great images. If I go out and buy the same equipment as was used to capture a fantastic photo, will that also confer upon me the same skills that the original photographer has in composition, exposure and ability to capture the moment? NO !!!!! Ever read a great book and said the author must have a fantastic word processor etc. No !!!!!!

I hate Monday mornings lol wink

Surely asking which camera you use is better than
"Great photo, you 'shopped it, right?"

Happens a lot. I guess I get one e mail a month asking. The comment that I really hate is "Is it doctored?" (To which I always respond 'yes', of course).

Mrs Get writes for a mag and they published a letter last week which asked "What camera does your photographer use, I'd like to produce photos like that".

Luckilly the mag responded... 'We use professional photographers who have had years of practice'... etc

Same happens with music. Someone asked me recently how long it had taken to write a bit of music. "About 35 years" was my response.

It is annoying indeed. I've been thinking about doing a magazine shoot with my phone just to prove a point.

On the subject of gear obsession...

A photographer went to a dinner party where he showed many of his photographs. The lady of the house said, those are very nice pictures, you must have a great camera. He said nothing, but when leaving for home offered the following compliment to the lady of the house "The meal was very nice, you must have great pots and pans."

ok then, try and get a great picture using a £9.99 640x480 pixel camera with a plastic lens tongue out

I do know what you mean, but good equipment makes it so much easier to get good pictures a lot of time (assuming you know how to use it).

Crap cameras might take a good picture, but it might well be luck more than anything.

If a "crap camera" might take a good picture then it's always capable of doing so - the only difference would be how it's used.

Depends how crap though, like some fixed focus disposable cameras. Photograph something in good light that it can meter that falls in focus and it'll be ok. Take a picture closer or further away that isn't and it'll be shocking.

That still comes down to the use of the camera though. A good photographer will be able to make the best of what they have. Giving someone that's only ever used the camera on their phone for snapshots a Hasselblad won't improve their photos. There's more to it than just pressing buttons in the right order.

Exactly, and a good photographer will know the limitations of thier equipment and work within those.

Maybe I guess. But I think there is an interest in what camera's people use. And there is no denying a camera that takes good pictures is so much easier to get good pictures from.

rofl It appears there are striking similarities between commissioning music and commissioning photography
