Camcorder for a beginner

So in my quest to own as much technology that I won't use/don't need my next purchase is going to be a video camera.

I have been looking at the Panasonic SD80/SD90, any good? Judging by the reviews the SD90 is far better and definitely worth the price difference?

Any others that I should consider?

Will be used for a holiday to Florida in May and then just generally whenever really.

Portability is key, 2-3 hours battery life would be OK, alright low light quality and no internal memory needed as will be using SD cards.

Any tips for a complete beginner that understands photography to a high degree would be appreciated

I have the SD90 and have been very pleased with it. It is simpel to use and seems to produce good results. It is also compact. OK so I my prevous cameras were a Canon that takes 8mm tapes (1994?) and a JVC that took mini DV tapes, these were huge in comparison. It will however fit into a coat pocket easily.
The still photos it takes are not great, but better than my phone, however I doubt you are buying it for still photos. The video however is excellent and I found the optical zoom to be good. You can if you want to at a later date purchase a 3D adaptor for it. I have not done that as I do not have a 3D TV and don't see the point personally.

Yeah the 3D add on does nothing for me to be honest.

Think I've made my mind up on either an SD80 or SD90, just try and wait for a bargain to come up on either or I guess.
