Interesting Essay: "It's all about the small details".
Discussion
Theory expounded here.
I'm not totally sure it's always as simple as is made out. But I'm very interested in views from those frequenting this thread since there is much variety of material and different levels of experience and, perhaps more to the point, backgrounds in different areas of brain stimulus.
On the other hand, afaik, not too many medium format users ...

On tuesday I shot with an F5 35mm and a Hassleblad under identical studio conditions and the same film. I'll see how those turn out. Mind you someone was shoting a Mamiya with a 30Mp back on tether and the detail was ruthless! The D700 was a little kinder!!! None of it makes me want to consider MF. Far too many cons for me. I am more than happy with what the D700 turns out.

tbh, this guy sounds like one of the "internet experts" that he derides. The images he uses in his article don't exactly blow me away, and he just seems to be having a bit of a rant.
I think he's having a pop at the typical posts on forums like this. Sure, the pics on that article are crap (as are a lot of of pics over at LuLa), but I think they are just there as furniture to break up the paragraphs.Who on here knows and understands what a an Ebony or Better Light is? Anyone on here used one, or the other?
No mention as to what he shot anything with and there's ambiguity with regard to viewpoints of the subject, so criticisms of lens distortion aren't warranted.
I agree and understand his sentiment though, regarding differences between smaller formats and medium back formats, film or digital. Born out of real world experience rather than reading reviews and w
king off over 'specifications'! And that same sentiment applies to Hi-fi, computers, as well as photography…. in my experience.
But YMMV, so if you are happy with mediocrity, by all means, continue you to knock one out with ignorance.

I'm not going to argue that DXOmark is the last workd but their measurements are consistent and scientific.

They place the mighty Phase one IQ180 5th best in dynamic range behind some nikons and the pentax. The venerable Fuju s5 pro is still up there & the next MF sensors are way down at 11th.
Colour Depth there are 3 phase one backs before we get to the first SLR. And frankly unless you can shoot at base ISO and wait the seconds for the image to process an SLR is going to be better in non ideal situations.
Sure you can pick a poor camera and show its not so good vs a good camera but (professional) people dont just randomly pick up any old camera do they...

The fact that he asserts a mains cable makes a difference to the sound of a hifi, and that it needs 'breaking in' doesn't really fill me with confidence about his knowledge on anything else. In his summary he suggests avoiding myths, but is quite happy to back up his viewpoint with one anyway.

That was an interesting link! Unfortunately cost isn't factored in and as you allude to, the best camera is the one you have to hand or, more correctly, the one you actually take the picture with. Here:

This is the point he's making. People reading 'specs' and charts rather than real world, hands on experience. RobDickinson said:

Is that why the 180 is their highest scoring 'King of Sensors'? http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Camera-Se...Not that I would take anything DXOmark said with anything other than a large pinch of salt. Their methodology and figures are frequently questioned. DR is only one aspect, a bit like declaring that a given car has the best gearbox and therefore is the best car. There are so many parameters affecting image quality, in the real world, which bear no relationship to some measurement in a lab.
The only way to understand the differences is to do your own tests, in the real world, and draw your own conclusions. Not by reading other peoples opinions, reading test charts or downloading files from dubious sources that don't bear any relevance to your sort of photography.

When using MFDB I do shoot at base ISO and wait for the image to process, because I want the highest quality, most accurate colour, picture I can get. But yes, if I need to shoot fast in lower light I'll pick a different and better tool for that situation. Horses for courses etc.RobDickinson said:

No, I don't.Part 2 of Mark Dubovey's essay is now available
Still interesting and thought provoking (IMO).
Not necessarily right or wrong.
