Camera for the £200 mark

I don't know about such things (I'm new to this all) but if it's a compact you're looking for the Canon S95 seems to be what's raved about on these forums. Slightly over budget (£230.)

A bit over budget but the Sony HX9V has got a lot of good reviews. I've used one (played with it before I bought my NEX-5N) and they're pretty easy to use, with decent ability.

+1. I've taken my TZ7 (an older version of these) around the world for photos. They have excellent software, excellent Leica lenses and a microphone that works equally well videoing training sessions at work or in the mosh pit at Wembley- the microphones give you decent sound quality too.

It's worked up to 43 degree heat, and was only slightly flummoxed at -15 degrees C.

I really don't see why people have camcorders AND digital compacts these days.

When my camera wears out I'm definitely getting another TZ series Panasonic Lumix.

I work in a camera shop. I'd have to agree with your friend. When it comes to compact Nikon's I see an awful lot being returned faulty.

The Canon is a good choice as is the Sony above, it's little brother the HX7 is also good.

I also used to work in a camera shop, and I didn't notice any more nikons that others.
The difference is a Nikon produce cameras for a cheaper market around the £70 mark (s3100) where as canon tend to produce their PowerShot range at a higher mark hence the higher price.

Even a big Nikon fan/user I know admits their P&S efforts are mostly a bit meh.

Pany, canon, fuji I think do the best compacts.

Impressed with the s95 I picked up but then I havnt used the equivalent competition ones, I know and trust canon.

Honestly, the best advice is to go and play with some.

Around the £200 mark, given your requirements, you're unlikely to be disappointed with any of the big players.

Canon, Panasonic, Sony, Nikon, Fuji to name five.

Go into your local Jessops / LCE etc, and try them out.

Buy the one which you like using the best etc

If you want to research a bit before you go, then www.dpreview.com is a good review site.
