Canon 7D or 5D Mk ii?

You are right in that the 17-55mm won't fit the 5d but in overall terms of image quality the 5d beats the 7d.
My 7d when used at an ISO of 800 or above during the day shows up quite bad noise levels. Something I've always mentioned since buying it but that others say they don't notice. I do wish I'd bought a 5dMK2 but it was a few hundred outside of my price range a the time.
Rather than buy a 5Dmk2 now though why not wait a few months as the mk3 is meant to be out in April (but the rumour mill has been saying it will be out shortly for over a year now!).
If you have numerous EF-S lenses and did a lot of sports photography then I would understand your choice for the 7d but as you tend to do portrait/landscape a 5d would be the better choice.

I went through exactly the same dilemma back in November, and spent about 2 hours with each camera with each of my lenses.
The 7D without a doubt has all the bells and whistles, fps, levelling, focussing and much more being a much newer camera.
But, the 5D mk2 is full frame, with IMO better in low light situations.
I went for the 5D in the end, because I mainly shoot portrait and landscape and had made sure that the lenses I had bought since the 500D had been EF to give me the choice.
The intension had been to keep the 500D as a backup, but after using the 5D for about a week, thought it would be a lot of money tied up in a camera I would hardly ever use, so sold it.
The 5D is a magnificent camera, especially for the type of photography I like.
I wouldn't decide which camera to go for based on one lens you currently have, but base it on the type of photography you want to pursue.

7D isn't as bad with noise as some make out, it is very critical of under exposure though, do some digging around there are some high iso images from the 7D that are correctly exposed that are quite impressive IMHO.

I waited 6 months for the 5D mk3 then gave up, so bought the mk2.Also, the mk2 is at a good price at the moment. What price will the mk3 launch at and what the availability be like?
The current spec I've read on the mk3 looks very good, but can probably sell the mk2 at a small loss if I really wanted to upgrade should the mk3 ever materialise.
I would buy now when you decide which is the camera for you, 7d or 5D

I'll be buying used so the Mk iii probably not an option for a while...Sounds like my suspicions were confirmed...it needs to be a 5d Mk ii!!

Switch the 50/1.2L for an 85/1.8 (or 85L, or 135L) and the 17-55 for a 24-105L
Basically if it moves, and if you dont shoot high ISO often the 7D is the one to go for.
If it doesnt move and/or you shoot high ISO often then get a 5D.
There isnt so much in it . 5D will have 1.2 stops shallower DOF for the same aperture, and 1 stop or so better noise & poorer AF ( only the centre point is really reliable).
Note: studio portrait is possibly better on the crop as you arnt shooting shallow DOF - this means you can use shorter cheaper lighter lenses for the same FOV. Environmental portraiture I think is best with a 5D for the DOF control.
