Opteka GPN-1 GPS on Nikon D5100

Grr, my Xmas present got delivered with the wrong cables in the box so I had to send it back to Amazon! I was bought an Opteka GPN-1 GPS unit which I am trying to use with my Nikon D5100. Replacement arrived today and I've plugged it all together but it doesn't work. Camera manual and quickstart sheet seems to suggest that all I need to do is turn it all on and it'll start working.
I don't see the GPS indicator on the LCD and the Position menu option to see the GPS data is greyed out. The green LED on the Opteka unit does light, initially it blinks then goes solid.
Has anybody had any success with the Opteka GPN-1 GPS unit and a Nikon D5100?
I don't want to send this one back too! I also don't want to spend >£140 on the Nikon branded one (way, way overpriced considering you can get a full on car-sat nav for half that and a GPS chipset costs circa £10). Amazon reviews suggest mixed success.
I've emailed Opteka support but had no response yet.
