recommend me a flashgun

I have a Canon Eos 400(may upgrade it in 2012 for a newer model) and have noticed that the flash doesnt seem to offer much in the way of 'illumination'.Ideally i would like something that is not too bulky,i'm not really bothered about the make just something for an occasional snapper like me.

Hmm.

Quite a lot of choice available.

What sort of range do you want? Most add on flashes will give a huge improvement in range and coverage over the built in unit (as you would expect) but of course the further they need to project the more light is required and so they get bigger and heavier with more batteries too.

And then there is the question of budget.

After which is the question of full automatic integration of exposure required or is that not too important? If not too important then you could, for light use, certainly consider buying used on eBay initially if that would help to answer an questions you may have about range and size.

My first flash was a Sunpak PF30X which worked well for a cheapy.

I upgraded it to a 430 exii when they were on offer at £150 last year, again a good bit of kit.

If you really want to keep the size down Canon does a 270ex which is quite small.

I got a Nissin D something...they are £80 or so for a flash with most of the functionality of the canon 430...

All the flashes (apart from the 270) are relatively big and make the camera look huge

Glad i asked the question now.I had virtually decided that the Canon would be ideal for me(size and budget)
