Another Camera Choice Question - but my first

First post on this section of the forum, just a ‘bit’ of guidance required please. I currently use a point and shoot Panasonic TZ5 bought a couple of years ago and it ticked the boxes at the time. I’m looking to upgrade so started by considering the G3 purely because the current camera worked very well. Despite the price, the build / functionality is very good.
Where possible I like to make an informed decision on a purchase so decided to take advice from a Pro Photographer who's a member of another car related forum. He suggested that I look at a Canon G12, not something that I had considered but after considering it, it opened up new options.
New options was where the problem started and I'm not one to pester so that's why I'm here.
Once I’d torn myself away from Panasonic and looked at camera with manual control I started on Canon DSLR, then thought what about Nikon! I spent the last month going through that debate on my own and I’m leaning towards Canon. So 550D or 600D, OK 600D. I’m nearly there but I wasn’t totally happy with the button press, it didn’t feel how I expected it would, not much feel? I might have big hands but they’re not particularly clumsy and touch/feedback is important. So the last step and the absolute top end of the budget is the 60D.
Apologies for the long winded approach but my question is, is the button press on the 60D any different to the 600D. I’m not knocking the 600 but if the buttons on the 60 are better it’s important enough to me to pay an extra 160ish GBP. Reason for posting is that I've not had the chance to get to the dealer in the last few weeks and I want to move soon.
Any thoughts please.

Andy - I've recently traded up to a 60D from a 450D. I did give the 600D some serious thought before eventually going for the 60 as much of the functionality is the same (as I guess you know) but I haven't regretted it as the 60 is excellent ergonomically and 'fits' well in my (average sized) hands.
However if it's purely buttons you are concerned about I'd say they were pretty similar...

Thanks for sharing your experience, how do you find it in use? I was concerned about knowing whether I was on the button.
Anyway looks like I've been given the go ahead for spending the extra cash so what the hell. I was looking at the 18-135mm lens option, but the 17-85mm is more expensive (Tesco's cos I get discount) why? USM? Would it make much difference in normal use (non video)?

My g/f has the 550D and I have the D7000. I've had Nikon's for a while, started off on a D40, then D80/300/700. I don't shoot anywhere near as much as I used to so I've downgraded.
Whenever I use the 550D it reminds me that I'm used to things being the other way round. Some of that is lens mount, some is front and rear button preferences, some is just plain not gettin' it! The Canon's always felt a little too light for me, which strangely is why my g'f prefers it over using the Nikons. There's nothing in the picture quality at any reasonable ISO's, and the Canon has the slight edge on video ability and sound. Guess it's what you like the feel of - there is a bit of a difference using the two day to day

Great that there are people out there with real experience of the kit rather than relying on the guy at the dealer telling me how good the most expensive piece of kit is. I don't do 'silly' expensive and don't see the point in starting now. I drive with added lightness .... but not to light. Guess the same would go for my choice of camera.

Wrt to the lenses, neither are star performers as such so it really depends how much you need the extra reach of the 18-135. In my opinion I would go with the longer reach (why not an 18-200 ?) as a 'walkabout' lens. If you get serious you'll want more expensive and specialised glass later and if you just want a general purpose lens for casual use you are also sorted. These lenses are optically compromised but are very handy - it's a trade-off
