Small point & shoot - which one?

I used to have a Lumix FX7 which was a great point & shoot, did the job and was nice and small.
Unfortunately it perished when I dropped an alloy wheel on it
So I'm looking for a replacement - emphasis is on portability and size. Loved the tiny form factor of the FX7.
What's hot at the mo? I like Lumix and would happily have another. No Canons though, have had bad experiences with several!

Does it fit in your pocket better? Lot's of people post looking for recommendations that are nice and slim..... 
I hear Canons......
....make great photocopiers.
(But, TBH, I have a Nikon dSLR ("The Brick") and a compact (the P7000) and I wouldn't jump to a Nikon first on the compact front, despite loving any (old) Nikkor strapped to the brick.....)

Yes, I had an expensive (at the time) S60 that was treated very well and died with an e13(?) error message which appeared to be a common problem. Lens wouldn't move. My brother had the same with an S70, my wife had an A70 or something which the lens stopped working on, and more recently an ixus where the CCD died after a couple of weeks. 1 or 2 problems I could deal with, but 4 cameras dieing over as many years...?

Point taken but I have a few digital Canons in the family, several owned for a number of years, and the only one we had a problem with was an Ixus, bought as a refurb, that developed a lens problem after about 9 months and was fixed under warranty in 3 days. (Connector had come loose on a lens movement microswitch). That one eventually died when, apparently, 'the cats' tipped a vase of water over it but it was some days before anyone noticed. A slight water ingress through the one unprotected point (where the strap would be fitted had it been fitted) led to the circuit board tracks corroding. Not worth repeairing by then. Mind you I have to say that I am slightly doubtful about the story surrounding its demise. Actually, I'm a Nikon bloke, but all the reviews highlighted the S95 as being the best small compact, and when it comes to tech, I have no brand loyalty*- I am partial to German cars, mind.

No love for the Lumix TZ20?
Had pretty much decided to go this way for a simple-ish point and shoot for my 16 year old daughter (who just wants to press a button, and get nice pictures, any discussion of manual control EV values etc would be met with typical teenage apathy).
Appreciate the Canon might be the sharper tool, but the Lumix seems to have a few more bells and whistles to attract a teenager (and the magpie in me).

Not sure what bells & whistles the Lumix has that the Canon hasn't? (I haven't checked since I was looking to buy mind). Main reason I went for the Canon (apart from it's diminutive size) was that it'll do almost everything my DSLR will do, including exposure bracketing... and has user definable options on the front ring. Brilliant idea - saves so much faffing about in menus.I work in a camera shop now. From the compacts that people bring in broken, I'd advice you buy Canon or Sony only.
I loved my old Panasonic, broke after 5 years, but some of our in store demo one's don't work as expected sometimes.

t compacts are steaming piles (have good picture quality but tend to break), Fuji, Samsung and Olympus tend not to get the best picture results.
I'm recommending customers the HX9 mostly (european compact camera of the year), or it's smaller brother the HX7. You get a bit more for your money than the Canon's, and they all take SD cards now, as well as sony memory sticks.
