Memory Card able to be read after a yr under water!

Camera is in a bit of a state but I was surprised the data on the card was still readable after a year under water.

A friend of mine was scuba diving under Eastbourne pier when he found a lost camera, took it home and rescued all the images off the card, that had been down there a while too.

Camera found over 1000 miles away from where it was lost. Even has a video of a turtle dragging it along.

I wonder if the turtle tried to eat it thinking the underwater case was a jellyfish?

Had it succeeded no doubt some newspapers would start campaigns to ban waterproof cases for cameras ...

More impressive is how a camera that makes no claims to be waterproof managed to work underwater for five minutes...

Odd that the original article makes much of the Canon camera NOT working (unsurprisingly), but fails to mention the brand of the memory card that did!

Funnily enough I was looking in that watersports shop near Embankment station yesterday and they had a load of Samsung "waterproof" memory cards in the window and I was wondering if all memory cards were actually waterproof, so it'd be good to know what card this was.

Ah, but the article says it was in an underwater case (see above). Therefore, given water protection and bouyancy, it's not all that surprising that it turned up somewhere in working condition. Good news for the case manufacturer - their product seems to work as intended.

Maybe. But then again ... the cases usually have external control buttons that operate the camera controls and if the camera has a dedicated video start button it is quite conceivable that something, the turtle attempting to eat the thing for example, migth start the video. I would guess it would shoot for as long as the battery lasted or up to whatever file size limit the camera works to. Or shorter if the clever beast worked out how to stop it recording after its performance....
