Bazinga! What a weekend at the Rhythm Riot it just gets better and better. I’ve got a whole mountain of shots to go through so bare with me as it will take a while. I covered half the weekend and Neal Reed covered the other half. George Barris certainly was a hit at the show, taking time to speak to anyone who wanted and telling some great tales of times gone by. The cars of Gary Hillman made the Barris visit even more special, George hadn’t seen some of these cars for 30 years. The was also a very special Model A début at the show, fresh out of Paul Burham‘s workshop, more on that later. Top bands played all weekend and people danced their shoes off. Other highlights included the burlesque skills of Cherry Shakewell and Missy Malone which were followed by a very brave chap proposing to his girlfriend on stage , luckily the answer was yes!

Before you do, try out the Sigma 85mm F1.4 (if you haven't already). Less than half the price and a cracker of a lens. I bought one and I'm really pleased with it. OK, it's half a stop slower, but focussing is a noticeably brisker and bokeh is superb. You could buy a 7D with the savings!

Lovely images Nick, as always. I was going to ask what lens you used; were they all taken with 85L?

The processing is so perfect for the subject matter too, love it.

Thanks. I used two bodies, a 5D with 24-105L and a 580ex flash and a 5DII with 85mm 1.2. I had the 5DII for ambient (of which there was very little and all coloured) and used the 5D with the flash for when there just wasn't enough ambient light available and I wanted to pick out the action. My 5D is dying though, the screen is playing up so they'll be no chimping with that soon, it will be like using film.

For those not in the know George Barris (the old dude in the yellow jacket) started a customising business in LA with his brother in the 50s. After building some pretty cool Kustoms and winning some shows George got friendly with some Hollywood types. He went on to build the Batmobile (Adam West's), The Munsters Cars, Knight Rider, Monkees, Starky and Hutch, etc. So he's a bit of a legend.

He also build some pretty wacky 60s show cars such as Bunk Bed and Pool Table which were there at the weekend. The car above was built for a 60s version of Alvin and the Chipmunks biggrin
