Swapping my 450D for an ultra thin compact?

I am considering selling my 450D/50mm 1.8 II camera with battery grip to fund a much smaller and much more compact handheld.

What ultra slim cameras are there out there? Also what options do I have for swapping my kit for the new camera? Anywhere that does this?

I'd imagine I'd get a reasonable sum for my current gear as it is in immaculate condition and comes with a lot of accessories, original boxes etc so budget is not an issue.

I would imagine you'd do best selling rather than trading with a dealer. MPB have a 450d for £260, they would offer you a fair amount less than that as a trade. A few months back I bought a boxed, unopened but secondhand 50mm 1.8 from Ffordes for £69 delivered.

You may get £200 for the pair as a trade in I would imagine.

OP - I would suggest you eBay your kit unless you are incredibly lazy. I have bought and sold a lot on eBay and if you follow the usual precautions you should be fine. I have not had a single issue so far.

I was offered £180 trade in for a lens which I went on to sell for £270 on eBay so trade in prices are very poor in my experience. In contrast the market on eBay for photographic kit is very active so you almost always get a decent price.

How ultra-thin do you want the compact to be?

I swapped my SLR kit for a Sony NEX-5 a while ago and couldn't be happier with the IQ, but still wanted a properly small camera to take around every day.

I recently bought a Sony TX10 which is amazingly small for something which is water/drop/freeze proof, but the IQ is quite a long way from the NEX or my old SLR.

The Canon S95 is supposed to have the best image quality of a compact, but at 30mm thick I doubt I would take it everywhere with me and that would defeat the point.

I'd be interested to hear what you choose.

As it stands the Sony TX55 is winning, 12.2mm thin!

I was going to wait for that. It has the same sensor as the TX10, but is a fair bit smaller because it is not toughened. I didn't care about the toughened aspect much, but the TX55 doesnt take SD cards and I am too lazy to switch away from my Eye-Fi card now!

It is a great looking camera, but see if you can test it to take sure you are happy with the drop in IQ from your 450D before you buy.

And responsiveness compared to an SLR.

If you are used to taking instant shots as they occur don't expect that from a compact in real time use.

If that doesn't worry you particularly many of the more recent cameras will likely suffice. In fact some of the older ones might too.

I have just returned from holiday where I took a recently purchased refurbed Canon S90 and G11 (for stuff that required filters) and my old Canon 400D to cover wider angles and a long zoom and longer elapsed time shots. As far as IQ goes the differences are small but despite the compacts being fast for their camera types and seeming impressive on initial tests they just don't have the responsiveness of an SLR. If that is important to you you may want to try before you finally commit and drop your SLR kit.

To be honest responsiveness isn't too important to me, I am off to Florida in May and really don't fancy lugging round my DSLR, not to mention what the mrs will do to me if we have to stop every 30 seconds to take a photo!

I ordered the TX55 this evening, will arrive mid next week, looking forward to it! Real pain in the arse having to swap to Micro SD cards though.

My daughter and her partner recently bought a TX10.

The touch screen does not get good reviews from them but the panoramic capability produced well controlled results, albeit that all the files I have seen so far are under 2Mb so are unlikely to print well at significant sizes. But what it does it does well - all in camera though, so no chance to produce a self edited hi-res version as far as I can tell.

The touch screen is vastly improved on the 55 so I'm told, it's meant to be very good!

I can imagine printed images being crap as well but I have never printed a photo ever so it doesn't bother me

I recently had a quote for an upgrade of my 450D body only from "Digital Depot". They offered me £180 in part exchange for a new 60D. The 450D is 2 years old with about 8500 clicks.

Yeah a company offered me £150 for mine, laughable.

I got £370 for it on Talk Photography.
