Go pro camera

I want to get a go pro type camera. I've looked at a few and not totally sure which to get.

Go pro seems to get the best reviews, are there any others in a similar price bracket anyone could recommend?

Also there's a new revised version which is £300 or I can get the old go pro hero hd for about 240. Don't really know if it's worth the extra.


Another thing! Doesn't look like it has a viewfinder..am I right? Can see that being a ballache.

I've tried a few different cameras now and they've never been what I wanted so I need to get it right this time! It's going to be used on a motorbike so needs to have decent sound too. Nothing more annoying than getting back from a drive or ride to view a vid an it's just full of wind noise.

Any help muchly appreciated!

There's a tv show in the US called storm chasers.

They (try to) intercept tornados with various different things. They all have go pros and the footage appears to be pretty good IMHO.

You can also buy a little attachable 3" LCD screen that clips to the back of the GoPro to check your shots before/after filming.

It's not really a problem not having a viewfinder, you just need to make sure the horizon will not be on the pi55. Quality is v good - but with all these sorta' cameras wind noise can be troublesome if mounted outside: http://www.stevecarter.com/r5005.wmv

i Have a go-pro and love it. also have the detachable screen. (comes with new casing so its all enclosed)

Try and buy one in the US. Its stupid but it literally is just price matched. its £299 dollars for the motorsport cam and fixings in the US. and its £299 here Same goes for all accessories.

so thats £187 if you buy in the US (plus their taxes)
or £300 here.

Agree with the above. Buy from the US site and it is a helluva lot cheaper. Also the LCD screen is $75 out there!

I have a GoPro and I love it. Get the tripod mount for it. $8 well spent then the other various mounts each have its own purpose.

The main differences between the new and the old is the processor is (apparently) 2x faster on the new and the dot matrix screen on the front has more detail so it looks easier to set up.

I use my camera all the time. For everything, timelapses of long drives, film a cycle, taking pics while running etc etc. They are sturdy little beasts.

I bought a GoPro this week from Amazon for 250 notes - its the old one not the new one so they are still available.

Edit: they've dropped the price even more now. GRRRRRR

Me - I'm the odd one out here - I've got a Contour.

Works exactly the same as the Go Pro's but I prefer the sleeker styling and given the amount of times mines gets abused the squarish edges of the Go Pro were going to get damaged.

For viewing purposes - depending upon which one you go for it can come with a Bluetooth card which allows you to see what your shooting at for alignment etc to your Iphone which is really handy.

Go pros are ok but have a look at the POV HD

Much better bit of kit all round.... but a bit more expencive.

Have a look on Ebay for a second hand one if you don't want a new one.

If you want to speak to someone who won't rip you off give the guys at http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/ a call, the advice they give is spot on IMO.

I would also look at the contour range.

The one thing most these cameras don't have is an mic input (contour + and the POV HD do) so the sound will always be a bit rubbish.

They are great cameras. Simple to use, very reliable ad vertually indestructible.

And yesterday I had it mounted right next to the exhaust for half an hour whilst we tested at silverstone.
The camera got very hot but didn't miss a beat or take any damage.
I love them.

From what I've seen on you tube its as good as the others but you can tuck it out of the wind as its on the cable instead of the camera, however I use mine with one of these which is spot on and as good as you will ever need for something like this.
