Just looking through the sites for a new battery for my Canon 5D...and the prices are all over the place, from £1.49 up to around £30.00 for a genuine Canon one.
Can anyone give me an idea whether its worth getting a correct Canon, or are the copies any good ?

£30 sounds cheap for a genuine canon one, i thought they were more like £80 or so.

I have bought third party batteries (hama) for my 50d from 7dayshop.com. I think as long as you buy a branded one from someone you have heard of before, it doesent matter if it's third party.

Most seem to say if it's branded then it's alright. Others also say they've bought the really cheap ones and although they don't register the same as Canon ones do in the camera they work just as well.

I know some people buy 3 from 7dayshop for about £15-20, they are 3rd party batteries. Some say they are brilliant and some say they pack up pretty quickly and/or don't last as long. Never been inclined to try them to be honest.

I spose we could be led to believe that because its expensive and a "genuine" Canon item.then it must be good, but sometimes i wonder, all a bloody good marketing ploy i reckon, what i`m trying to say is that it applys to most stuff we buy, if its not genuine then it aint no good...i wonder if we`re being ripped off sometimes.
I spose an example would be certain car parts, lets say a Genuine Mercedes front headlamp assembley,cost £500 !! ....a copy of the same £99.00 works just the same, as a friend of mine has just found out.

I've bought a few cheaper batteries in the past and while they've all worked, none have been anywhere close to the Canon equivalent in terms of battery life.

all they are is a few cells in a plastic case. I have used OE and copies in my D300s and D700 for ages. They are indistinguishable except for about £40 stays in my pocket each time. I also use phottix battery grips without problems.
