5MP photo - how large on canvas to keep quality?

Hi guys,

Recently took (IMO) a fantastic photo of my god-daughter at a Krazy Kids type place - so lots of bright colours etc, and want to get it blown up on to a canvas for mum (and a copy for me) for Christmas. It's a 5MP photo taken on an iPhone (none of that strange HDR malarky), and I was wondering how large I could go without the picture getting blocky. I assume a 1m x 70cm print would look gash?

Depends how fussy you are and how close you're viewing it from.

I'd say it's pushing it a bit, go one size down.

I have had a 4MP blown up to A1 and it looks OK from a few feet away

Canvas is quite forgiving (as long as it's not the nasty flat stuff) - I think you'll be fine. But, as mentioned, it depends how close you'll be when you look at it.

Hmm, it's gonna be on a living room/bedroom wall, so I'd expect it'll only ever be viewed from 1m+ away.

Maybe a size down is best. It may well end up looking like a billboard otherwise!

Run it through something like OnOne Perfect Resize or have a printer do it for you. Using Actual Size photos, the file size is going to be around 1.4 meg with dims 2592x1936 @ 72dpi - it's optimised for web by default, could do with being a bit bigger and greater DPI (most printers will ask for around 300 dpi)

I'm thinking A3 size, at 5MP, would look good enough on Canvas (Poster quality)
