I've known a few like that too, makes me laugh how they think expensive gear = pro. It just means you've wasted a lot of cash on something your crap at.

The number of people I know who have set themselves up as "pro" photographers when they don't appear to even have a grasp of focus and exposure is scary.

Worse still was when helping a friend of my girlfriend to find a wedding photographer, some of the shots people had used on their portfolios were truly cringeworthy.

Best advice I ever got re driving on track:

You can all drive, and you can all play snooker, but how many of you can make a 147 break at snooker? That's how hard it is to drive fast.

It's the same with photography, without the armco ...and the death of course.

That is fantastic. I have a ex neighbour on my facebook who is the most deluded 24 year old I have ever met and now has a photography business and when a mutual friend asked her what training she has, she replied "you don't need training" I had hoped her very poor portfolio and high prices would put people off but she claims to have been booked every weekend for weddings in August

He's a proper dopey lad and because he's got an SLR he thinks he's awesome at taking photos. He's done a couple of weddings now at £300 each.

When I asked him about what settings and lenses he's using he just looked at me confused, I think he shoots manual with a kit lens.
