This years New Zealand Institute of Professional Photographers award winner has been announced.
Here is a selection of his winning work.

Speaking about his own work Wood says his focus is turning the intangible into visual elements.

blah blah blah, what?
half of those 6 are so overly PP that they fail at being being 'photos'
How's that for starters?

I should add that my opinion is heavily laced with Jack..
However, I visit this part of the forum to get inspired, as a photo n00b.
The above shots do nothing for me, nothing at all.
Give me a a GC, RD, 911 landscape, a DD bridge
, a GF or 4lM car, a FPC shot of nothing much at all, all of which and others that I can't recall right now are truly, GREAT, photos.
However, I visit this part of the forum to get inspired, as a photo n00b.
The above shots do nothing for me, nothing at all.

There seems to have been a lot of effort put into the creation at one or more points and they certainly have a style although how unique it is I have no idea. They do seem a little dark both as photos and as messages. Looking at one of the other news items the supporting image is also very dark. Is this a current NZ fashion?
I can sort of appreciate them as works but they don't strike me as startling images that I would be desperate to have on the wall somewhere.

They feel Flickr'y, remind me of what Miss Aniela was doing maybe 3 years or so ago but with more recent themes and concepts. Interesting post work, and it feels heavy on that aspect of it but I think they stand up with that level of shoppery, they def wouldn't work the same without it
I don't find the pictures themselves to be particularly impressive. If you took away the HDR they are just average IMO. He is obviously very good at post processing and deserves praise for that, but I think photographer of the year should be someone who takes evocative and original photographs that don't rely as heavily on post production.

...but then to me photography is about showing something that is really there - transporting someone to a place, an event, a perspective. If it conveys the feelings at the time, so much better. These are very clearly staged, and as such to me are artificial.

Overall my view also.The NZIPP awards are usually won by seriously 'over processed' shots. Sometimes I wonder if entrants work the images more knowing this is the bias of the judges or not. This guy seems to be a perfect fit though.
What gets me is the fundamental photography underlying this photoshopery is , if not poor, not exemplary.
His portraits tend to very formulaic. Face on a 3rd, 'object on the other. 'Peter Beck' is probably the least processed and rather uninspiring photography.
Andrew Hunter / The Hat Maker are excellent final images but I'm not sure what photography had to do with them.
The Emilie shots are pure kidsploitation. Emilie the Pioneer looks a poor photoshop job even.
Worst out of the lot is the Basilica one. Horrid fake sky , sepia colour wash, nasty vignetting. Strikes me as trying to photoshop your way out of a very poor photo.
Perhaps the prints look better.
