Canon EF 85mm f 1.8 lens opinions?

I've been considering getting a decent portrait lens for my 5D II for a while and a I've just been offered a virtually brand new 85mm EF 1.8 lens. Thing is, for the same price, I could buy a brand new EF 50 f1.4 and that lens seems to get very good reviews. This is my first foray into portrait lens stuff as most of my photography up until now has been outdoor & architectural stuff and I fancied broadening my horizons a bit!
I'm just wondering what the 'everyday person' has to say rather than the formulaic online magazine reviews.

I also use the 85mm 1.8 a lot. Great portrait lens, useful short tele for all sorts of things, and it's small light and fast. I've never felt the need for the 1.2 version, and not just because of the cost. The 1.8 is sharp enough, fast enough, and much more convenient to use. My standard setup for as much possible is two 5DIIs, one with the 85mm and the other with a 35mm, either the f2 or the f1.4.

Thanks, that was quite an informative link. Did alot more digging this morning and the 85mm does seem to get the vote so I decided to go with it. Expensive morning as also came out of shop with a 60D....

Couldn't afford another 5D body (as much as I would love to) and I've always had a 350D as the cheap backup but that's now moved onto a new home. Did look at Jessops 550D offers but another local retailer had an ex demo 60D body that was substantially reduced and was too good to pass up. It should more than happily cover my old 350's domestic duties but with exra 'oomph' and just keeping the 5D as an outdoor weekend warrior should hopefully prolong it's life and mine as 'er indoors would kill me if I went out and bought another one!(This 5D is looking very sorry for it's self after a years work in the Welsh hills in all weathers) 85/1.8 is a great lens, well built, good optically ,fast focus. great lens.
The 85mm lens is great and is a bit of a revelation as to how 'fast' it is. I've tried it on both bodies and it's provided some interesting results... I'm going to need to practice a bit!
