High speed video
Discussion
Hi,
I want to start producing some video a bit like this.. http://youtu.be/qbIArhbE2Kk
I have been looking at high speed cameras and I have found this one http://www.exilim.co.uk/exilimhighspeed/exzr100bla... for not too much money, but I was thinking it would be nice to shoot at 30fps in HD or at least quite close.
Does anyone have any other suggestions, I am happy to look at more expensive models if the quality will be significantly improved.
Cheers

Well think of it this way. From the example you posted, you need smooth movement with the action slowed down maybe 4x. Smooth action needs the best part of 25fps, so you need something that works at 100fps, then you slow it down 4x to get 25 fps.
It's not my area but that's the basic maths

Looking at that video, I reckon you're looking at footage shot at 250 fps up to perhaps as much as 400 fps.
Unfortunately, you're not going to achieve that with a standard camcorder type thing, even the stuff used in Broadcast is modified industrial high speed stuff, with all the compromises that brings.
Simpo, 25 and 30 fps are both current HD framerate standards, of which there are at least 8 different versions at 1080 lines, with a further 2 at 720. It's something of a minefield, depending on where you are in the world, and what type of event is being shot, and even down to what 'look' is required.

I'm, sure I've read a good write up on those Casios on DPreview. Not sure of the vid quality, but according to the spec, they shoot at 240, 480 and 1000 fps, but only at VGA res. So fine for having a play and for youtube. You could always scale it, add some noise and voilà, grungy art!
Maybe you need to consider using this, from what i remember it simulates high speed footage from normal footage for you, plenty of videos on vimeo and youtube of it.

The footage was shot using an older Casio compact with a frame rate of 25fps (we are talking about the the slow motion stuff as there is also time lapse in the video for which I am already equipped for). In which case, you'll require software to interpolate all the missing frames that'll be needed to make the movement smooth. That video has shots that are slowed down by roughly 5 to 10 times, which would be 2.5 to 5 fps if shot at 25 fps, and which would be very rough and jerky if shot in real time.I think it was most probably delivered in 25fps, but shot in at least 250fps.
Here is an example of what the casio camera can shoot:

Not that impressive really.
Mind you = what are you wanting to use this video for? Home videos? youtube stuff?
