Nikon D5100 -v- Canon Eos 600 D

Price aside, which of the above cameras would you pick and why?

I'd pick the one that felt the best to me in my hands and worked how I liked.

Theres not enough real difference between the bodies themselves to worry about.

There is some difference in the lens lineup, depending on budget and needs.

Canon have a good 17-55f2.8, the 55-250IS, a cheaper 50mmf1.8, better macro lens selection, some great f4 pro glass (L).

Nikon have a better cheaper 70-300, the 35f1.8afs, 18-105 etc.

Remember you will need af-s lenses to autofocus on the D5100 , and have to pick appropriate 3rd party lenses with built in motors.

The other thing is do you know people with either brand that would lend you gear?

A good friend with a 70-200L may sway the decision!

Like my binoculars, I don't think you can/should decide just from looking at info on the net, and asking for opinions is rarely meaningful as people tend to back their own preferences.

So as Rob says, go get your paws on both and that will help you decide. Watch out for salesmen though as their advice can be far from informed or neutral (they are there to shift boxes not be consultants)

As Rob said, whichever suits her.

I've tried Nikon and never got on with them, strangely my dad had exactly the same issue when he was a professional photographer, for me Canon just suits me better, that said Mrs Envy might be the opposite and a Nikon might just feel better.

Canon all the way here. They're evenly matched - it really just comes down to which brand you feel happier with. Have always preferred Canon, and always will.
